Romances sans paroles
Ariettes with no argument in them, Belgian country seen from a moving carriage window, and watercolours of London and Kent, all written while the poet was walking out of his marriage and across northern Europe with Rimbaud. The title is the programme: song with the statement taken out, rain in the heart and no event to hang it on. It went through the press from a Belgian prison cell, arranged by a friend, after the companionship ended in a revolver shot.
