Honeymoon
Patrick Modiano · 1990 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary
A documentary filmmaker hears in a Milan hotel bar that a Frenchwoman took her own life there days earlier, recognises the name, and on reaching Paris lets his colleagues and his wife believe he has flown on to Brazil while he takes a room out in the suburbs. What he assembles there is Ingrid Teyrsen's story, a girl of eighteen who met a young man on the Riviera in 1942 and never went back for her father. Modiano returned to the disappearance at the centre of it seven years later in Dora Bruder.
