La Place de l'Étoile

Patrick Modiano · 1968 CE · Novel · French · Contemporary

Raphaël Schlemilovitch narrates himself through every role French antisemitic writing ever assigned a Jew, collaborator, gigolo, white slaver, Zionist, patient of Doctor Freud, moving between the Occupation, a Bordeaux lycée, Vienna and Tel Aviv with no regard for the calendar. The prose ventriloquises Céline, Rebatet and Drieu la Rochelle, whose books Modiano had been reading since childhood in the Paris of his absent father. A first novel written at twenty-two, awarded the Prix Roger Nimier, by a writer who took the Nobel in 2014.
