Dora Bruder

Patrick Modiano · 1997 CE · Narrative Non-fiction · French · Contemporary

An old copy of Paris-Soir for December 1941 carries a notice asking for news of Dora Bruder, fifteen, whose parents give an address on the boulevard Ornano. Beginning there, Modiano walks the streets she would have walked, applies to registries, school records and police archives, and keeps arriving at how little any file will give up about a life. The most direct of his books about the Occupation, and the one that put her name on a Paris street.
