Snow Country
Shimamura, a Tokyo idler who writes about Western ballet he has never seen performed, rides the train through the tunnel into the snow country a third time to see a hot-spring geisha named Komako. She keeps a notebook listing every novel she has read, drinks more than she should, and asks nothing he is able to give; he cannot stay and cannot stop returning. The Nobel committee cited Kawabata's Japanese sensibility, and this is the book that sensibility is usually read in.
