The Izu Dancer

A twenty-year-old student walking the Izu peninsula to shake off what he calls his orphan's disposition keeps catching up with a troupe of travelling entertainers, and with one dancer whose age he has guessed wrong. Inns turn the troupe away, villages post notices against performers, and he is allowed along as far as the port. Kawabata's first success, taken from a walk he made at nineteen, and the most filmed of his stories.
