The Voyage Out

Virginia Woolf · 1915 CE · Novel · English · Modernist

Rachel Vinrace, twenty-four and educated by nobody in particular, sails on her father's cargo ship to a resort on the South American coast, where an aunt takes charge of finishing her. The English guests at the hotel talk politics, propose marriage and organise an expedition up the river, and Rachel finds she is expected to have opinions about all of it. Woolf spent seven years and several breakdowns on her first book, rewriting it more times than anything that followed.
