Near to the Wild Heart

Clarice Lispector · 1943 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Joana's father dies when she is small and she is handed to an aunt who cannot bear the way the child watches things; grown, she marries a law student and finds she can be neither a wife nor anything she can name instead. The prose keeps to the speed of her thinking rather than of events. Written at twenty-three, it startled Brazilian criticism into declaring a new prose; the title came from a line of Joyce a friend proposed and she had not read.
