Água Viva

Clarice Lispector · 1973 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

A painter who has taken up writing addresses a man she is no longer with, saying she wants to catch the instant before it turns into memory and refusing him any story to hold. There are no characters and no events, only a voice working through flowers, mirrors, a wristwatch and the alphabet. Cut out of a far longer manuscript over three years, it became the book on which Hélène Cixous built her account of writing in the feminine.
