An Apprenticeship, or The Book of Pleasures
Lóri teaches small children in Rio and lives alone and badly on her father's money; Ulisses, a philosophy professor, has told her he will wait until she can meet him properly and will not touch her before then. What passes between them is mostly talk, notes, and hours spent teaching herself to swim at dawn. Written after the difficulty of the middle novels, it opens on a comma and was a deliberate turn toward a book a reader could love.
