The Apple in the Dark
Martim leaves a roadside hotel at night believing he has killed his wife, walks into the interior, and reaches a farm where the woman who owns it and her frightened cousin take him on as a labourer without asking. Having given up the words he was handed, he starts again from stones, then plants, then animals, naming each as though nobody had. Lispector's longest novel, refused by publishers for two years.
