Steppenwolf

Hermann Hesse · 1927 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

A middle-aged reader lodging in a respectable German house holds that he is two creatures, a man and a wolf, keeps a razor and a date in mind, and is handed a pamphlet in the street that describes him by name. A woman he meets in a bar sets him to learn the foxtrot, introduces him to a saxophonist, and steers him toward a Magic Theatre advertised for madmen only. Hesse's most misread book, taken up in the 1960s as a manual and written as a diagnosis of a bourgeois soul at forty-eight.
