The Journey to the East

Hermann Hesse · 1932 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

A violinist called H.H. sets down what he can still remember of a pilgrimage made by a secret League whose route crossed centuries and fictions as freely as it crossed countries. The company's servant Leo vanishes in a gorge with the baggage, the expedition breaks up, and years afterwards the narrator sets out to find him and to account for the failure. Hesse described it as a preliminary study for the long novel he was already at work on, and its roll of pilgrims quietly gathers up characters from his own earlier books.
