Demian
Emil Sinclair, safe inside a bright and orderly household, tells a lie to a neighbourhood bully and is blackmailed into a second world of fear and debt. An older boy named Max Demian buys him out of it, then teaches him to read the mark of Cain as a sign of election rather than guilt, and the lesson runs on through school, a drunken adolescence and the last summer before 1914. Published under Sinclair's name and seized on by a generation coming back from the trenches; Hesse's analysis with a pupil of Jung is all over it.
