Ambiguous Adventure

Cheikh Hamidou Kane · 1961 CE · Novel · West African · Contemporary

Samba Diallo learns the Quran by heart under a master who burns and pinches him for every slurred syllable, until the Most Royal Lady of the Diallobé rules that the country must send its children to the foreign school to learn how to win without being in the right. Sent on to the lycée and then to Paris to read philosophy, he finds he can hold the argument for God and the argument against it in the same hand, and can no longer pray. Kane's only novel of its generation, and the text through which the francophone African quarrel over Western schooling is still taught.
