The Great Weaver from Kashmir
Steinn Ellidi leaves Iceland at twenty-one determined to become the most perfect man on earth, and works through Europe's available absolutes — poetry, women, socialism, dissipation — until a Benedictine house in Belgium takes him in. Behind him at home is Dilja, who has loved him since childhood and marries someone else while he is deciding. Written at twenty-four in the abbey where Laxness had himself been received into the Church, it brought modernism into Icelandic and embarrassed its author for the rest of his life.
