Under the Glacier

Halldór Laxness · 1968 CE · Novel · Nordic · Contemporary

The Bishop of Iceland sends an emissary with a tape recorder to Snaefellsjokull to report on a parish priest who has not held a service in years, has boarded up his church, mends primus stoves for the district and answers doctrinal questions with remarks about the weather. The parishioners are courteous and useless, occultists camp on the glacier, and the priest's wife is either buried in the ice or is not dead. His last major work folds Taoism, saga deadpan and a Church inquiry into one joke.
