Candide

Voltaire · 1759 CE · Novel · French · Enlightenment

A young man raised on the doctrine that this is the best of all possible worlds is thrown out of his patron's castle and into war, earthquake, inquisition and slavery. He carries his tutor's optimism across three continents, looking for the girl he was expelled for kissing. Catastrophe told at comic speed, battering doctrine until it gives way to tending a garden.
