La Pucelle d'Orléans

Voltaire · 1755 CE · Poem · French · Enlightenment

Orléans lies under English siege and the deliverer heaven has sent is an innkeeper's servant from Lorraine whose virginity, in this telling, is the strategic asset every party to the war is manoeuvring to take from her. Saints, monks, courtiers and a winged donkey work both sides of a campaign staged throughout as farce. Voltaire burlesques Chapelain's solemn epic of 1656 along with the national saint herself, which is why he let it circulate in manuscript for twenty years and never once owned it.
