The Maid of Orleans

Friedrich Schiller · 1801 CE · Play · German · Romantic

A shepherd's daughter carries a helmet and a banner to the Dauphin's court, names the secret prayer he made alone to prove her calling, and turns the French war back on the English. Her mission holds only while she stays untouched by earthly love, and on the field she meets an English knight she cannot bring herself to strike. Written against Voltaire's mockery of Joan, restoring her as a figure of the sublime.
