Brussels under Spanish rule cheers Count Egmont in the streets while Philip II sends the Duke of Alba north with troops and a commission to end the disorder. William of Orange advises flight; Egmont, sure of his standing and easy with the burgher's daughter who loves him, stays and goes on hunting. Twelve years in the writing, across the move to Weimar and the Italian journey, and later given an overture by Beethoven.
