Saint Joan

George Bernard Shaw · 1923 CE · Play · English · Modernist

A farm girl from Domremy talks a captain out of horses and an escort by telling him what her voices have said, and within a year has put the Dauphin on the throne at Reims. The English command, the Burgundian nobles and the Church each conclude separately that a soldier taking orders from God rather than from them cannot be allowed, and the case moves to Rouen. Shaw worked from the trial record and prefaced it with a long attack on every earlier Joan he had read.
