Heartbreak House

George Bernard Shaw · 1919 CE · Play · English · Modernist

An eighty-eight-year-old former sea captain has built himself a house in Sussex shaped like the after part of a ship, and invents weapons in a back room while his daughters, their husbands and a young woman down for the weekend circle one another. The guest arrives engaged to a much older businessman, and the household sets about undoing that before the first evening is out. Shaw subtitled it a fantasia in the Russian manner on English themes and named Chekhov's country-house plays as the model.
