The True Story of Ah Q

Lu Xun · 1921 CE · Short Story · Chinese · Modernist

A day labourer at Weizhuang with no surname, no home but the village temple and no clear idea of his own age turns every beating into a victory by revising it afterwards in his head. Turned down for a wife, run out of work and back again, he hears that revolution has reached the county town and concludes that he was always a revolutionary. Serialised under a pen name in a Beijing supplement, it handed China a word for its own self-deception that is still in use.
