Wild Grass
Twenty-three short prose pieces written in Beijing across two years of political collapse, most of them dreams: a traveller who cannot say where he set out from, a corpse that feels the worms start, a shadow taking leave of the sleeper it belongs to. The images are private to the point of obstruction and their author refused to gloss them, saying only that the book belonged to a bad time. His one experiment in the prose poem, on the model of Baudelaire's, read in Japanese translation.
