A Madman's Diary
A preface in stiff classical Chinese reports that an old schoolfellow has recovered from an illness and left behind the diary he kept while deranged; the diary follows in plain vernacular. Its writer notices the dog looking at him strangely, works out that the villagers and his own elder brother mean to eat him, and sits up with a history book in which every page of Confucian virtue has two other words written between the lines. The first modern story written in vernacular Chinese and the founding text of the May Fourth generation.
