Animal Farm

George Orwell · 1945 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

An old boar tells the animals of Manor Farm that man is the only creature who consumes without producing, and dies three nights later; within the year the beasts have driven out the farmer and painted seven commandments on the barn wall. The pigs take charge of policy, the cart-horse resolves to work harder, and the commandments quietly acquire qualifying clauses. Four publishers refused it while the Soviet Union was an ally; Orwell called it a fairy story and meant the description.
