Kongi's Harvest

Wole Soyinka · 1965 CE · Play · Nigerian · Contemporary

Kongi rules Isma from a mountain retreat ringed by an Organising Secretary and a chorus of flatterers, and wants the deposed Oba Danlola to hand him the first yam of the harvest, and with it the sanction of the old order. Danlola is in detention, and the reprieve of a condemned man becomes the price of the ceremony. Written as the first wave of African independence hardened into strongmen.
