The Suns of Independence

Ahmadou Kourouma · 1968 CE · Novel · West African · Contemporary

Fama Doumbouya, last legitimate heir of the Doumbouya princes of Horodougou, makes what living he can in the capital by turning up at funerals and seventh-day prayers, the borders closed against his trading and a party card now worth more than a dynasty. His wife Salimata, excised as a girl and violated the same day, keeps a stall and remains childless, which in Fama's reckoning is the second thing independence has taken from him. Kourouma built its French out of Malinké syntax and proverb, which is why Paris turned it down and Montreal printed it first.
