El Hadji helps drive the French out of the Chamber of Commerce, accepts the briefcase of cash that replaces them, and marries a third wife the same week, only to be struck impotent at the bedroom door. His search for a healer runs alongside beggars and cripples repeatedly swept off the streets on his colleagues' orders. Senegalese censors demanded ten excisions; the target survives every one.
