Ceddo

Ousmane Sembène · 1977 CE · Film · West African · Contemporary

In a Senegalese kingdom being taken by Islam from inside the court, the ceddo, commoners who refuse conversion, seize the king's daughter and hold her in the bush, forcing a public argument over whom the people belong to. A European slaver and a Catholic priest wait at the edge of the same village for the outcome. Sembene was barred from screening it in Senegal for eight years, nominally over the spelling of the title.
