The Devil and the Good Lord

Jean-Paul Sartre · 1951 CE · Play · French · Contemporary

A bastard mercenary captain is starving Worms out for the archbishop during the German peasant risings when a priest offers him the keys to the city and asks him to spare the poor inside. Told to his face that doing evil is easy and doing good impossible, he stakes a year on pure charity and signs his lands over to the peasants. Sartre's longest drama, staged by Louis Jouvet as the atheist's answer to a century of God-haunted theatre.
