The Respectful Prostitute

Jean-Paul Sartre · 1946 CE · Play · French · Contemporary

A woman newly off the train from New York wakes in a Southern town with a young man in her room, a senator's nephew, who wants her signature on a statement that a Black passenger from her carriage assaulted her. She saw his cousin shoot an unarmed man on that train, and by turns the police, the senator and a crowd gathering in the street come to explain what her word is worth. Sartre built it from the Scottsboro case after his first American tour.
