The Condemned of Altona

Jean-Paul Sartre · 1959 CE · Play · French · Contemporary

A Hamburg shipbuilder with six months to live calls his family together and asks them to swear they will keep the house after him, including the elder son shut in an upstairs room for thirteen years and believed dead by everyone outside. His brother's wife climbs the stairs to look at the recluse, who spends his days addressing tape recordings to the crabs of the thirtieth century. Sartre's last major drama, written during the Algerian war.
