The Flies

Jean-Paul Sartre · 1943 CE · Play · French · Contemporary

Orestes arrives in Argos as a tourist with his tutor and finds a city black with flies, its people in mourning dress and keeping an annual penance for a murder the king and queen committed fifteen years earlier. His sister, a servant in the palace, is the one person who refuses to repent, while Zeus follows the young man round town recommending the comforts of remorse. Sartre wrote it in occupied Paris and got it past the German censor as Greek tragedy.
