The Robbers

Friedrich Schiller · 1781 CE · Play · German · Romantic

A younger brother forges letters to turn their father against the heir, and the disinherited Karl answers by taking command of a robber band in the Bohemian forests, meaning to set the world right by force. Schiller wrote it at twenty-one as a regimental surgeon and was arrested for slipping away from his duke to attend the Mannheim premiere, which reportedly left the house in uproar. German drama's first outlaw hero, and the model for a century of noble bandits from Byron to Dostoevsky.
