Don Carlos
Friedrich Schiller · 1787 CE · Play · German · Romantic
The Spanish heir is in love with his father's queen, promised to him before a treaty handed her to Philip II instead, and he asks to be sent to Flanders to get away from the court. His schoolfriend the Marquis of Posa turns that private misery into a political instrument and wins an audience in which he asks the king outright for freedom of thought. Schiller's first work in blank verse.
