Bajazet

Jean Racine · 1672 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

While the sultan is away at war the favourite he left in charge offers his imprisoned brother the throne and her hand, and the vizier who engineered the offer needs the prisoner to accept a woman he does not want. Everything turns on messages carried through a palace nobody may leave. Racine set it in a Constantinople of thirty years earlier, arguing that distance in space can do the work distance in time usually does — the one near-contemporary subject among his tragedies.
