Bérénice
A new emperor and the eastern queen he has loved for five years learn that Rome will not have her, and spend a day unable to say so to each other. Three people talk in an antechamber between his apartment and hers; the entire action is the postponement of one sentence. Racine wrote it against the rule that tragedy needs blood, and the preface defending that choice is his clearest statement of what he thought the form was for.
