Athaliah
A queen who destroyed her own line to take the throne of Judah is drawn to a child she keeps seeing in a recurring dream, and the priest guarding the temple knows exactly whose child it is. The action is one morning inside the temple precinct, with choruses of girls between the acts. Racine's last work, written again for Saint-Cyr but performed almost privately after the fuss over Esther; Voltaire called it the masterpiece of the French stage.
