Andromaque
A Trojan widow is held captive at the court of the son of the man who killed her husband, and he will spare her child only if she marries him. Each of the four principals loves someone who loves another, so every act of will lands on a body that cannot return it. The 1667 première made Racine the rival of Corneille overnight and fixed the chain of forced passions he uses for the rest of his career.
