Alexander the Great

Jean Racine · 1665 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

An Indian king refuses to submit as the Macedonian army advances, and two rival princes divide over whether to resist or bargain while both love the same queen. The conquest happens offstage; what is staged is the negotiation of pride. Racine moved the piece to a rival troupe in mid-run, breaking with Molière's company and earning his first reputation for ruthlessness.
