The Litigants

Jean Racine · 1668 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

A judge so addicted to the bench that he holds court at home is barricaded inside by his son, two neighbours ruin each other over a trifle, and a dog is tried for stealing a capon. The joke runs on legal language rather than on plot. Racine's only comedy, drafted with friends over tavern evenings, failed in town and was rescued when the court laughed at it.
