The Thebaid

Jean Racine · 1664 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

Two brothers hold Thebes in alternate years and the year one of them must yield has come. Their mother and sister plead between the armies while their uncle counts what each death leaves him. Racine's first staged work, taken up by Molière's company at the Palais-Royal, already sets the pattern he keeps for thirty years: a curse working through a family that talks rather than acts.
