Iphigenia
The Greek fleet lies becalmed at Aulis and the oracle names the commander's daughter as the price of a wind, so he summons her on the pretext of a wedding. Her mother and her betrothed come with her, and the father must keep lying inside his own household. Racine added a rival princess to spare himself Euripides' god from the machine, and the play was first given in the gardens at Versailles during the festivities of 1674.
