Horace

Pierre Corneille · 1640 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

Rome and Alba Longa are camped against each other and married into each other in both directions, so rather than spend the armies they agree to let three brothers from each city settle the war. The Horatii and the Curiatii are chosen, which leaves an Alban wife inside the Roman house and a Roman sister betrothed to the enemy, whichever way the fight falls. Corneille took the episode from Livy and turned the state's claim on a family into the first of his Roman tragedies.
