Ninety-Three

Victor Hugo · 1874 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

In the summer of 1793 an old marquis is put ashore in Brittany from an English corvette to take command of the peasant rising against the Republic, and Paris sends a young commander of his own blood against him with a former priest attached to watch them both. The war is fought hedge by hedge and hostage by hostage until it closes around a fortified tower where three small children have been shut into the library. Hugo's last novel, written in the shadow of the Commune, and his attempt to settle accounts with the Terror on the Revolution's behalf.
