The Legend of the Ages

Victor Hugo · 1859 CE · Poem · French · Victorian

Set end to end, the pieces run the history of humanity from Eve outside the garden through the patriarchs, Spanish knights, Italian tyrants and the age of iron, toward a future the poet keeps straining to see into. Most of the first series was written on Guernsey, and it contains Boaz asleep on the threshing floor, the eye that follows Cain into the tomb, and a satyr who grows until he fills the sky. Conceived as one panel of a three-part epic of humanity that Hugo never finished.
