Toilers of the Sea

Victor Hugo · 1866 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

On Guernsey a shipowner's paddle steamer is run onto the Douvres reef by a pilot who wanted her lost, and the old man swears his niece to whoever can bring the engine back off the rocks. Gilliatt, a solitary the parish half believes to be a sorcerer, sails out alone with a hammer and a forge and is still working when the equinoctial gales arrive. Written in exile and dedicated to the island itself; its fight with an octopus in a sea cave put the word pieuvre into French.
