Mtsyri

Mikhail Lermontov · 1840 CE · Poem · Russian · Romantic

A Circassian child taken prisoner by a Russian general is left at a Georgian monastery, grows up among the monks, and on the eve of his vows walks out into a storm and is gone three days. What he tells the old man who finds him is what those three days held: a girl at a stream below the rocks, a night fight with a leopard, and the sight of the mountains he was born under. Lermontov gives the confession almost the whole poem and leaves the monastery only the frame.
